" A teaching aid for NCT ANTs, this chart illustrates the progress of labour, stimulating class discussion and visualization.
A must for every antenatal teacher, the Linear Contraction Chart is a visual aid for parents which illustrates the journey of labour, indicating typical intensity, shape and patterns of contractions. While no labour is exactly the same, this tool gives parents a general understanding of what contractions look like in an average labour. Having a linear timeline of labour measured by contractions gives you a powerful tool to demonstrate labour's journey. Each contraction can be seen as one less until the birth of the baby. Also, the visual picture of the smooth lines conjures up images for parents that they can use as powerful metaphorical tools during labour - imagining a hilly road in the country, waves on an ocean, a roller coaster, etc. Let the parents decide what it looks like for them.
This chart is made of coated, lightweight paper with scrolls for easy rolling and storage. The scrolls can be detached for permanent fixing to a wall for teaching, or there are hooks on the scrolls. Some teachers just use pegs to attach to curtains!
Care: rolling carefully increases the longevity of the chart. The coated material will crease after some time but this does not detract from usability. Dimensions: 217x19cm"
New Chart with NCT Professional branding - available from 12th January 2011

Helps parent s understand intensity of contractions |
Date Posted: 04/04/2011 |
| Parents comment how useful it is to see the contractions in a time line and the colours and pattern of the contractions help them to understand that they will feel different. Works well with the stages of labour chart too. |
